Lon Baronne
Every month, RG175 spotlights one of the independent school leaders we've placed, taking a deeper dive into their journey, insights, and impact. This month, we feature Dr. Lon Baronne. Dr. Baronne serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Episcopal School of Acadiana (ESA), an independent K3–12 school with campuses in Cade and Lafayette, Louisiana. A spine surgeon by profession, Dr. Baronne brings to his leadership at ESA a deep commitment to strategic vision, organizational health, and community engagement. His experience in both medical and educational settings has shaped a thoughtful approach to governance that balances mission-driven decision-making with operational clarity. His long-standing connection to ESA—as a parent, supporter, and now trustee—has given him a broad perspective on the role independent schools play in shaping future leaders guided by wisdom, compassion, and excellence.
What is your connection to RG175?
As Board Chair, I partnered directly with RG175 and consultant Tom Olverson to lead ESA’s Head of School search.
Can you summarize your experience working with RG175 on the search process?
Working with RG175 was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Tom Olverson brought deep insight into the independent school landscape and an ability to listen closely to the community’s aspirations. Through surveys, interviews, and structured conversations, RG175 helped us articulate not only the strengths of our school but also the areas that required honest attention. The process was data-driven, transparent, and deeply human—ultimately leading us to an exceptional match in our new Head of School.
If you had one piece of advice for other schools or search committees beginning this process, what would it be?
Really take the time to understand and own both the strengths and weaknesses of your school. A search succeeds when you can clearly define the culture, challenges, and opportunities of your institution—and when you find a candidate who resonates with that authentic profile. RG175 was invaluable in helping us see ourselves clearly and then connecting us with leaders who would thrive in our unique environment.
What did you find most rewarding about chairing a search for an independent school?
The most rewarding part was seeing how deeply the entire community cares about the mission of the school. The process brought faculty, parents, alumni, and trustees together around a shared purpose—one that transcends individual preferences and focuses on the long-term flourishing of the institution. Watching that alignment form and then culminate in a successful appointment was both humbling and energizing.
