By far the most important job that a governing body undertakes is appointing a new head of school, and it involves time and effort. Our international representative, Gillian duCharme, calling upon the support of her colleagues when necessary, can assist you. Visiting the school at the outset enables her to get to know its needs and to familiarize herself with the culture of the country, so that both position and context can be clearly defined and RG175’s global network of contacts can be used to find promising people. Matching school to candidate is done with great care and she works in conjunction with the school throughout the process.
In the course of her career, Gillian duCharme has worked in single sex girls’ and coeducational schools, in day and boarding, with ages ranging from 3 to 18 years. In addition to teaching French, she has been a department head, deputy head and director of admissions. Her headships in the USA and UK and knowledge of schools worldwide give her the expertise to advise international as well as UK schools in a variety of ways. She has done searches in schools in China, Taiwan, Turkey and the United Kingdom. She is a member of ECIS, NAIS and NAPSG.
Boards often also need help with governance through retreats, strategic planning and coaching and here too, RG175 International has expertise to offer. Gillian duCharme’s board positions over the past 20 years in independent schools and other not for profit organizations, including a university, a national museum and a non-governmental refugee organization, give her the experience to advise governing bodies and heads on governance, management and other issues.
Mrs duCharme has consulted to schools in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Turkey and Bermuda. Recent assignments have included board retreats in England and Bermuda. Current work in the United Kingdom includes mentoring an elementary school head, advising a new board chair and conducting a head evaluation. Her colleague Roger Bass has done board retreats in Myanmar, India, Vietnam and Fiji.
